O adeus / Goodbye

Este desenho foi feito na noite anterior à minha demissão da empresa onde trabalhava. Trata-se de um grande marco na minha vida profissional e decidi ilustrá-la como se fosse o Mafarrico a sair do poço infernal onde trabalhava, deixando de ser escravo de um grande senhor diabo, para iniciar uma nova vida de aventura e de périplos mafarricos. O desenho acaba por ser uma espécie de caricatura, onde, inclusive, a empresa onde trabalhei durante quatro anos é facilmente identificável. Mais uma vez, editei a imagem no The Gimp, seguindo os passos habituais.

I made this sketch the night before I resigned the company where I've worked for four long years. This is a great mark in my professional life and I've decided on portraying it as if the Mafarrico left the infernal pit of hell where he dwelled and worked, leaving behind a slavery life under the command of a great devil-master, to start a new life of adventure. The sketch is also a kind of cartoon - itś quite easy to identify the company I've worked in. Once again, I've edited the image with The Gimp, following the usual steps.

Novos mafarricos / New mafarricos's

Aqui estão! Estranhamente, foram acabados em casa (embora os tivesse esboçado no hospital), no dia 20 de Maio, enquanto estive doente.

Here they are! Strangely enough, I finished them at home (although I sketched them while I was in hospital), on the 20th of May, when I was sick.

O barometro mafarrico finalizado / The finished mafarrico's barometer

Finalmente acabado... Esta ideia já me perseguia há alguns tempos, mas consegui acabá-la graças a um computador que um amigo me emprestou. Nele e também com o GIMP consegui recortar a imagem do barómetro, jogar com o nível (recortando-o, copiando, colando e apagando), colocá-la como nova camada da imagem do mafarrico correspondente e, uma vez que o barómetro era maior do que a imagem do mafarrico, coloquei um novo fundo de cor branca, juntei todas as camadas e... voilá!, cinco barómetros conseguidos, com texto adicionado posteriormente e com as cores revertidas para negativo.
Estes barómetros mafarricos podem ser copiados e usados como ilustração de um qualquer post, para qualificar um CD novinho em folha, o dia vivido, o nosso chefe... enfim, é só usar a imaginação e... o barómetro.

Finally finished... This idea was haunting for a while, but I managed to carry it out, thanks to a computer borrowed from a friend of mine. With it, and also using THE GIMP, I was able to cut the barometer's image, to resize the level inside it (by cutting, copying, pasting and erasing as necessary) and paste it as a new layer on the corresponding mafarrico. Since the barometer´s image was bigger than the one of the mafarrico, I was forced to add a new layer, as a white background, then I merged all the layers and... voilá!, five mafarrico's barometers, with some text, added afterwards, and the colors reversed.
These barometer's may be used to illustrate any post, to qualify a brand new CD, the kind of day you had, your boss... well, all you have to do is use your imagination and... the mafarrico's barometer.

Este mafarrico tem uma história muito engraçada: foi uma sequência criada para ilustrar um postal de aniversário de um bom amigo meu. Inicialmente, desenhei o mafarrico assinalado com o número 1; depois o "BUUM!!!" marcado com o número 2. Digitalizei-as e tratei-as no GIMP. Infelizmente não consegui recortar o "BUUM!!!" e colá-lo na imagem do mafarrico, criando uma nova imagem. Não sei se por inexperiência (porque ainda estou a explorar as potencialidades do GIMP) ou porque o meu computador não funciona muito bem com este programa (de vez em quando bloqueia e encerra inesperadamente ou não utiliza bem algumas ferramentas), não consegui. Então, decidi copiar a imagem do "BUUM!!!" inteirinha, colá-la em cima do mafarrico, como floating layer, dei-lhe transparência, juntei as duas camadas e apaguei o que se encontrava no interior do "BUUM!!!". Nos traços que ficaram sobrepostos, utilizei a ferramenta de "esborratar" e nivelei as cores (menu Layers > Colors > Levels). Só então ficou pronto = número 3. Finalmente, para ilustrar este post, passei-as a negativo, como já expliquei anteriormente.

This mafarrico has a very funny story to it: it was a sequence made to illustrate an aniversary postcard for a good friend of mine. I inicially drawed the mafarrico marked as number 1, and after it, the "BUUM!!!", masked as number 2. I scanned them and worked them with the GIMP. Alas, I wasn't able to cut the image of the "BUUM!!!" and paste it on the mafarrico, creating a new image. I don't know if it was my own inexperience (I´m still exploring the GIMP) or if it was a problem with my computer (from time to time the GIMP is unexpectadly shut down, some of it's tools don´t work, etc.). So, I decided to paste the entire image of the "BUUM!!!" and paste it on the mafarrico, as a floating layer; then I set transparency to 50% (more or less), merged the two layers and erased what was inside the "BUUM!!!". Where the strokes of both drawings overlapped, I used the tool to "smudge", and Ieveled the colors (menu Layers > Colors > Levels). Only then it was ready = number 3. Finally, to illustrate this post, I reversed the colors on both images, as specified earlier.

Estive a pensar instalar um "flash" com uma musiquita inicial para cada um dos meus blogues e estes dois mafarricos representariam o espírito da música. Ainda tenho de editar as "BSOs" dos meus blogues, mas aqui ficam os meus mafarricos mascarados, desenhados a 24 de Abril de 2006.

I was thinking about instaling a "flash" with a chosen music for each one of my blogs and these two mafarricos would depict the spirit of the music. I still have to edit the "OSTs" for my blog. Anyway, I introduce my two mafarricos in costumes to you here.

Ora bem, datas... Estes dois mafarricos foram feitos no mesmo dia, a 19 de Abril de 2006. O primeiro, com ar de Sherlock Holmes, foi desenhado de manhã, no comboio para Sintra. Dei-lhe os últimos retoques no tal café da Amadora, enquanto esperava pela minha amiga do trabalho. Foi também aí que iniciei o esboço do segundo, que só acabei em casa, no coração de Lisboa, depois do trabalho. O tratamento de imagem com o GIMP é sempre feito em casa, no meu computador e depois do trabalho, pela noite fora...

Very well, then... Dates. These two mafarricos were made in the same day, the 19th of April, 2006. The first one, with the Sherlock Holmes look, was drawed in the morning, in the train to Sintra. I gave it it's last touches in that same café in Amadora, while I was waiting for my friend from work. It was then I also began sketching the second one, which I finished at home, in the very heart of Lisbon, after work. Treating images with THE GIMP is always done at home, in my computer and after work, into the night...

Na mesma noite em que fiz a série de imagens a que se reporta o anterior post, desenhei também um dos meus mafarricos favoritos - Naughty. Este é, na verdade, um mafarrico que me assenta como uma luva, pois eu tenho a tendência a ver a vida e as coisas que me desagradam, muito em particular, com um tipo de humor perverso. Acabei os últimos retoques no já mencionado café da Amadora, na manhã seguinte.

In the same night I drawwed the series of images in the last post, I also sketched my favorite mafarrico - Naughty. This is actually a mafarrico that "fits me like a glove", for I have a tendency to look upon life and things that I dislike, particularly, with a sort of twisted humour. I finished giving the sketch it's last touches the next morning, in the cafe in Amadora that I mentioned before.

O barómetro mafarrico inacabado / The unfinished mafarrico's barometer

Esta série de imagens foi desenhada com o intuito de criar, posteriormente, um "barómetro mafarrico". Este "barómetro" pode qualificar qualquer coisa, desde a forma como está a correr o dia ou o CD novinho em folha, depois de o ouvirmos em casa. Obviamente, a ideia era usar as imagens separadamente e criar novas imagens, com montagem, no GIMP.

I drawed these images with the purpous of creating a sort of "mafarrico barometer". This barometer can be used to evaluate anything, since the sort of day you are having to the brand new CD, after you played it at home. Obvously, the idea was to be use each image alone and to create new composed images with them, using THE GIMP.

Este foi finalizado num café da Amadora, enquanto esperava por uma amiga minha que me dá boleia para o trabalho. Saíu-me dos dedos e da ponta do lápis que nem um avião supersónico. Parece que eu própria tive de me ambientar com o Mafarrico, até que ele me saísse naturalmente. Estava muito bem-disposta nessa manhã e tive esta pequena ideia luminosa para o meu blogue, pois achei que seria uma expressão perfeitamente mafarrica e natural ao criticar alguns aspectos da sociedade portuguesa.

This one was finished in a cafe in Amadora, while I was waiting for a friend of mine who drives me to work every other day. It came out of my fingers and my pencil like a supersonic airplane. It seems that I myself had to get in touch with Mafarrico, until it came out naturally. I was in a very good mood that morning and I had this little bright idea for my blog, for I thought it would be a perfectly natural and mafarrico facial expression to have when criticizing some aspects of the portuguese society.

Um pequeno esquecimento / A little omission

Esqueci-me de especificar nos anteriores posts a inserção de texto nas imagens. Não tem nada de especial. Após tratar as imagens no GIMP (versão 2.2), inseri o texto com o endereço do blogue em fonte Ani (disponível na minha versão do GIMP). Isto dá origem a duas camadas em RGB, uma com a imagem e outra com o texto; depois, indexei a imagem. O GIMP faz um merge automaticamente, pois o processo de indexação não permite múltiplas camadas. Convém sempre guardar um ficheiro XCF (formato GIMP) com todas as alterações antes de se fazer a indexação, pois, depois de um merge, já não se podem fazer grandes alterações (a menos que se passe a imagem novamente a RGB, mas que não permite alterar facilmente elementos de anteriores camadas).

I forgot to specify the text insertion in my earlier posts; there's nothing to it, really. After working the images in THE GIMP (version 2.2), I inserted the text with the blog's address - font Ani, available with my version of THE GIMP. Thus, I attained an image with two RGB layers, one for the image and the other for the text. Afterwards, I indexed the image. THE GIMP automatically merges the two layers, for the indexation process does not allow multiple layers. It is advised to save the image as XCF (THE GIMP format) with all of the alterations made before indexing, for after the merge, it is not possible to make that many changes in the image (unless you save it as RGB again, but you can not easily change elements of earlier layers with this, anyway).

O segundo / The second one

Este foi o segundo mafarrico que desenhei. Infelizmente, não tomei nota do dia ou da hora, mas lembro-me de que foi de noite. Antes de me deitar, sobreveio-me uma certa inquietação, uma ânsia criativa, quase que nas pontas dos dedos, como um formigueiro... E foi assim: em alguns traços inquietos nasceu um mafarrico furioso. Tratei esta imagem primeiramente no editor de imagem do meu scanner e depois no GIMP, como descrito no anterior post.
Acho que estes mafarricos retratam de alguma forma aquele que é o meu estado de espírito predominante na ocasião. Talvez eu não fosse a melhor companhia do mundo nessa noite.

This was the second mafarrico I drawed. Unfortunately, I didn´t write down the day or the hour, but I do remember I did it by night. Before I went to bed, I felt a certain restlessness, a criative urge, like a twitching in my fingers. Thus, a very angry mafarrico was born: with a few eager strokes... I worked this image first in my scanner's Photoeditor and then with The Gimp, as described in the earlier post.
I think that these mafarricos somehow portray my frames of mind in certain occasions. Perhaps I wasn´t the best company that night...

O primeirissimo / The very first one

A ideia que eu tinha vagamente em mente para ilustrar um outro blogue meu materializou-se, pela primeira vez (e não me lembro quando), em plena viagem de comboio de Lisboa para Sintra, onde eu trabalho. Este foi o resultado. Bom... Não exactamente assim, porque eu não desenho em negativo. Posteriormente, digitalizei o desenho e tratei-o com um programinha muito especial - The Gimp. Inverti as cores e, depois, tive de retirar o azul e o ciano, para obter uma imagem que ficasse totalmente branca num fundo preto. Em seguida, tive de nivelar o preto, para destacar mais o traço branco. Isto não foi muito bem conseguido em algumas imagens, mas eu acho que as prefiro assim. São imagens um pouco "cruas" e grosseiras, como um desenho a giz num quadro negro.

The idea I had in mind to illustrate another blog of mine was first materialized in a train heading to Sintra, where I work. This was the outcome. Well... Not exactly like this, becouse my sketches don´t come out as negatives. Afterwards, I scanned my sketch and worked it with a very special little program - The Gimp. I reversed the colors and then I had to remove both the blue and the cyan to attain a black and white image. After that, I leveled the black background, in order to bring the white stroke out. This last step wasn´t uniformely achieved in all of the images. But I kind of like it like that. The images look like raw material, like something drawed with a piece of chalk in a blackboard.

O porque deste blogue? / The reason for this blog

Este blogue nasceu de uns rabiscos que fiz nas minhas viagens em transportes públicos na grande metrópole que é Lisboa, para ilustrar o meu blogue pessoal. O Mafarrico Mafarricus, porém, excedeu largamente os propósitos e ganhou uma vida muito própria. Aqui ficam os meus rabiscos, à disposição de quem os quiser ver e levar...

A mafarrico is a small devilish creature, which in Portugal is associated to all sorts of unfortunate events and tricks of the devil. This little creature was drawed in a moment's inspiration in a train to my personal blog... and somehow gained a life of it's own. So, here it is, for all those of you who want to see it and take it "home" with you.
